Mac Lab Questions
Welcome to the College of Social Sciences computer labs. We hope this information sheet will help familiarize you with the labs. There are 3 Mac labs in Crawford, which are located in 114 (G4), 212 (G4) and 220 (G5 imac). The 114 lab is open to all students in the college and is staffed by lab monitors. There are scanner stations in 114 and 220. The 212 and 220 labs are primarily for instructional use but are open to all students during open lab times. The lab schedule is posted outside the lab door or can be found the college website at: http://www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu/pages/tech/lab/labschedules.html.
What do I do if my account does not work?
Let your instructor know and contact Warren/Doug at #956-6017 or send e-mail to wnoguchi@hawaii.edu with the subject heading “lab account problem”.
Where do I find all of the programs?
A tool bar will pop up if you move the mouse to the bottom of the screen. This is called the “dock”. All of the program shortcuts are stored here. A black triangle under the icon indicates that the program is currently active. If you don’t see what you need go to the Hard Drive and double click on it. Open the “applications” folder and a list of program should appear. A list of all the programs in the lab can be found at: http://www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu/pages/tech/lab/softwarelist.html
I’m having problems with my Zip Disk…
Make sure that your Zip Disk is Mac formatted. Use Iomega tools (you can find it in the applications list) to format it to Mac. The labs have 250MB drives that take both 100MB and 250MB disks.
How do I make backups?
It is extremely important that you make regular backups of your work. We cannot guarantee that we can save all your data if the server crashes. All labs can make CD or DVD backups.
- Insert a blank DVD-R/CDR disc in the drive.
- In the dialog box that appears, enter a name for the disc and choose the format you want to create. An icon for the DVD appears on the desktop.
- Drag files and folders to the icon. The space available will not completely update until all items have been copied.
- Choose Burn Disc from the File menu.
You can also save to Zip Disk or, the computers also have firewire/USB ports so you can use an external
HD/flash drives to backup.
The server is erased at the end of the semester so make sure you saved all of your work by this time. The labs are normally open until the last day of finals week but this is subject to change. Please look for posted notices in the labs.
My print jobs are not coming out but it says it printed…
Make sure that after you logged in you selected the correct room number. The print outs will have printed to another room if you did not select the correct one.
What is the public folder and how do I connect to it?
The public folder is a folder that everyone on the network has access to. You can use it to share files with others or your instructors may ask you to get class files from it.
- Select “GO” from the menu
- Go to “Connect to Server”
- Enter “128.171.198.11/Public” in the server address field and click “Connect”.
- Login using your same login and password that you use to login to the computer.
The “Public” drive should now appear on the desktop.
What other things should I know?
You should always make sure that you log out of your account and shut down the computer when you are
finished. Another student can use your account if you do not or you could be locked out of your account.
You have a print quota of 250 pages per semester. We cannot reset your print quota so make sure no one else uses your account.
There is a lot of money invested into the student labs in order to provide you with resources for class work. Please do not bring food/drinks into the lab. We will hold you responsible for damaged equipment. Lab monitors or instructors will ask you to leave the lab if the rules are not being abided by.
Please let your instructor know if you have any particular needs. They will pass on the information to us. If a computer isn’t working properly please let your instructor or the lab monitor know as soon as possible.
