Applications
When talking about desktop publishing, designers usually use applications like QuarkXpress and InDesign. Some still use Pagemaker and the less experience use MS Word.
QuarkXpress and InDesign are the top competitors in desktop publishing. Each have its pros and cons. It all comes down to personal preference. Quark has been around for awhile and has its followers. Newer users are more familiar with InDesign, which took over for Pagemaker.
